No smoking symbolGallery

We have put together some pictures of signs which we think are valid and which we think are not valid and why. If you have pictures send them to info@stupidlaw.org.uk and we may publish them. Click on images for larger version. This is based on English law as the rest of the UK is different!

We have made a separate page, or rouges gallery, of our pictures taken on 2nd July.

Valid signs

Our new sign for one of our offices, which is an entrace from another smoke-free premises and as such needs only to be the symbol.

Our new sign for one of our offices, 180mm square meets A5 area requirement, and wording and symbol comply.

This sign has a 70mm symbol so overall appears to be smaller than A7, but it is printed on a half A4 (105mmx297mm) clear adhesive backed plastic which is almost invisible. It is the most descrete compliant sign we have come up with so far.

This door has many signs, and the "?" shaped one in the middle is, we believe, compliant. It is more than A5 area (yes, I had to make a program to work out the area), and has the 70mm symbol and readable required wording. As far as we know there is nothing illegal about the other signs which are clearly wrong in saying various other things are illegal.

This sign has the required symbol and wording and is at least A5 size, but has other symbols and messages on it. We cannot see any reason this is not allowed, and neither did Bracknell Forest Borough Council initially. However, in a later letter they implied that additional symbols and messages were not allowed. We are awaiting a clarification of what they are actually saying. If additional markings are not allowed a lot of commercial signs would not be valid.

This is the standard sign being sent out to businesses. It should, obviously, be valid. However, if it actually slightly less than 148mm wide which may mean it is too small. I have to check the tollerances on A5 paper sizes to be sure. Also, it has a red line border and Bracknell Forest Council had implied that anything other than the required symbol and words is not valid.

London underground seem to have some valid signs in the carriages, but these look like older ones as many of the ones this size are faded.

London underground have clearly done some new signs at the stations. This does have more stuff on the same sign, but looks to be valid.

London underground have several different variations which include other messages on the same sign.

New sign on the doors of M&S. Massive, overkill, but seems to be valid.

Invalid signs

BP in Bracknell has a sign that does not have the required wording.

Waterstones in Bracknell are trying, but the wording is not right as they have added or knowingly permit smoking, so I think it is not valid.

One of the shops in Bracknell shopping centre is making an effort, but the symbol is too small for a start. Also, being an entrance from the main shopping centre (non smoking area) it can be a sign with just the symbol, but the symbol and text "No smoking" is not valid as this simpler sign has to be only the symbol.

London underground seem to have new no-smoking signs on the strip showing the stations, but this is too small to be valid.

Huge sign in Bracknell rail station and at the entrance, but not the required wording, so not valid.

Bracknell's main shopping centre - at the entrance but does not have the required wording so not valid. New sign required.

Bracknell's M&S - a nice sign in the same style as the rest of the sign, but does not have the required wording, and has no red circle, so not valid. New sign required.

Southwest train carriage no smoking sign. Trains only need a sign with the no smoking symbol and not the words needed in shops and offices. However, the symbol has to be at least 70mm diameter and this is only 60mm. Ooops, SWT have to put new signs in all their rolling stock.

[sorry for blurred pic] Orange shop in Bracknell - way too small and not required wording. New sign required.
